It’s an extra step, but it’s worth it: Wash your clothing inside out. The appliance company Whirlpool says there are many benefits to washing your clothes this way. It reduces pilling on the fabric; it more effectively removes odors; it prevents colors from fading or bleeding; it protects decorative designs on clothes; and it reduces the risk of detergents staining the clothes by accident. Even socks should be washed inside out, because the interior of the socks is what comes into contact with your skin.
