You might wonder as you scoop another spoonful of vanilla into your bowl: Is the paperboard ice cream container recyclable? While many communities do accept milk and juice cartons, ice cream containers are a little different. They are coated in a “wet strength” material that’s difficult to separate from the paperboard in the recycling process. Plus, if ice cream containers are not thoroughly rinsed, the sugary coating inside can contaminate recyclables. It's best to enjoy your ice cream and toss the empty container in the trash.
