Hitting the road for vacation? Be sure to do a few easy things at home to save energy while you're away. Start by setting your thermostat to a lower or higher temperature depending on the weather (smart thermostats now have a "vacation mode" feature that does all the work for you). Turn off ceiling fans and unplug electronics and power strips throughout the house. Unplug energy hogs like cable boxes, TVs and wireless routers. Lower blinds and close curtains, no matter the temperature outside, to insulate and block the sun's radiant heat.
