DEAR SOMEONE ELSE’S MOM: This will be my 18th year working at what’s become one of the last department stores in town. I have been in retail since I was a kid and I can say things have gotten so much worse in recent years and not just because of COVID.

One of the biggest problems is that there are not enough people coming to work in the retail field. Our store used to anchor a successful mall, which shut down a while back and is now under redevelopment as a medical office complex.
All the people who used to work in those long gone stores have moved on and people don’t shop the way they used to. So not only are there fewer people working at my store, but management has been given strict hiring caps. That means another holiday shopping season of working 50 or more hours a week, which gets harder and harder on me and my family.
I have also found customers are getting less patient and more rude, and not just the younger people.
While there are those who just show up and can’t wait to clock out, a lot of us who are still willing to work retail work hard and honestly want to do the best we can for our customers.
Could you please remind readers that a little bit of patience and politeness go a long way, especially when dealing with people honestly trying to do their best for them? --- DOING THE BEST WE CAN
DEAR DOING THE BEST WE CAN: As someone who once-upon-a-time worked in retail, enjoys shopping in person, and hopes malls and department stores won’t become obsolete, I’m more than glad to pass along your request for good behavior and patience on the part of customers.
It’s easy to be aggravated by having to wait in line or to hunt down available salespeople, but it’s also fairly obvious that the problems stem from, as you noted, a lack of people working in the stores, and that’s certainly not the fault of the staff members, who like you, are doing their best under difficult circumstances.
